Default Coast Guard Regs

I am taking my kayak to OC, MD for the first time next week. Can anyone tell me what the Coast Guard requires to have on board? I checked their website but couldn't find specific requirements for kayaks. Thanks.

Sorry I didn't see this post until now. There doesn't seem to be a consensus. I thought for certain you had to have flares but I got inspected once and while I had them they weren't on the check list.

In Florida the only two things that are required a a PFD and a whistle or other noise making device. BUT - don't go by the minimum required. For your safety carry flares, a cell phone or VHF radio, a flash light and First Aid kit. If you ever need one of those you will be glad you have them.

Default CG regs

There are no regs specific to kayaks. But for vessels under 16 feet:
All vessels are required to have onboard a wearable USCG-approved personal flotation device (PFD) for each person. The PFDs must be of the appropriate size for the intended wearer, be in serviceable condition, and within easy access.
All vessels are required to carry an efficient sound-producing device, such as a referee's whistle.
Vessels less than 16 feet in length are required to carry at least 3 visual distress signals approved for nighttime use when on coastal waters from sunset to sunrise.
Recreational vessels are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during periods of reduced visibility (fog, rain, haze, etc.). The U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules specify lighting requirements for every description of watercraft.
This should cover the CG requirements although not necessarily state or local requirements and definitely not everything needed.
For clarification see: http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/regulations.htm
