Moken 14

I have been paddling the moken 14 for about three months now. First thing I noticed about this yak before I ever got it in the water was all the storage space. The front hatch provides easy access to the hull. The hatch is secured by three twist lock cam locks providing a secure water proof seal. Behind the front hatch and in front of the center hatch is a small area that is great for a small soft side cooler or tackle bag. This area also has the padeye used for attaching a stand assist leash. Coming to the center pod which is one of my favorite things about this yak. The hatch opens up away from you and is hinged. Inside the pod is a molded is storage, area that provides a waterproof area to store anything you would like to keep nearby. I personally use this as a place to keep packs of soft plastics and go to baits. Also a secure place for your keys, wallet, and fishing license. Directly behind the seat is a twist lock hatch that provides access to the hull for more in hull storage. The rear tankwell provides a lot of storage. I'm able to have my crate along with an ice chest back there. The front of the tankwell has straps secured to the yak that provides you with a way to secure your crate. The rear of the tankwell has a bungee system that you are able to adjust on a slide rail to accommodate whatever you may want to carry.
Some additional features of the moken 14 that stand out are the rail system and the standing platform. The rail system is on both sides just front of the seat. This system provides the angler with multiple options on rigging. Feelfree uses a mounting platform that slides within the total that can be locked into place when on the, water then quickly removed for travel or storage. I use these mounts for my depth finder and rod holders. The other unique feature is the standing platform. Just in front of the seat this platform provides a cushioned area to stand and fish from. Also when in the seated position I have used the platform as a place to do rigging from since it is a large flat surface. One other great thing is the, wheel in the keel. This wheel makes moving the yak around on a semi hard surface a breeze for one person. A very great feature if you ask me. The kingfisher seat that comes with the moken is just simply amazing. I have fished over nine hours and never felt uncomfortable. It provides great back support and cushioning.
Now let's get to how it is in the water. Living here on the gulf coast in Alabama provides me with the chance to fish many types of water. From the gulf of Mexico to small freshwater creeks to open Bays. I have had the moken 14 in all of them and it handled perfectly. The stability of the moken is really one of it's best attributes. I have been caught in thirty mph gust in the bay while dealing with two foot swells and never felt as if I would flip. On calm water you can stand and sight fish with ease. As with any yak you do give up some speed to gain stability. With that, said the moken is still a easy paddle and will move fairly quickly. I have done 10 mile days and not been exhausted from the paddle. With it's size the moken 14 is a great open water yak. But don't let it's size fool you. The yak is still nimble enough to fish small back water creeks and inlets. Overall the moken 14 will provide you a stable yet quick fishing yak that will be,at home in any body of water.
I hope this review helps you in your research for finding the right yak for you.
