Guide Report - David Loger February 2009 E-mail

Report: The recent cold fronts have dropped the temperatures along with the tides due to winds blowing out of the North. The winds combined with the negative low tides have produced some great fishing for those that are determined to get out on the water and do some catching.
Redfish have been stacking up in the deeper holes back in local creeks in search of warmth and food. Various shrimp patterns dropped down to them on a intermediate tip equipped eight weight have been bringing in most of the catch, even out fishing those with spinning tackle due to the delicate presentation and the micro sized offerings that only can be presented with a fly rod.
Snook are also the game if you throw on some warm clothes and head out at night/early morning on an outgoing tide. Small Clouser minnows in white and olive, slinky fiber glass minnows and small Puglisi minnows are the sure thing when placed delicately around the dock lights. Look for docks that have some deep water nearby and you will find the Snook. For those that don’t want to use the fly tackle, a DOA Shrimp-1/4oz in clear/gold flake will be an offering few Snook can pass up.
Big trout are very active on the out going tides at the mouth of local creeks lately. My last few charters produced some very impressive yellow mouthed gators on top waters like the gurgler for fly tackle and chartreuse and white Clousers when the need to work deeper presents itself. On spinning tackle, a Storm chug bug or a small zara spook is the ticket.
In the late morning/early afternoon with a rising tide, schools of redfish show up on the outer edges of the flats. Look for run outs where the water runs on and off the flats and you will find the reds. An eight or nine weight with weight forward floating line and a long leader is a must. A rattle fish bend back is a great search fly, on spinning tackle the tried and true gold spoon will find them quick.
