Ian/Dizzyfish Ian is one of our regular forum contributors. He’s over in the United Kingdom and has his kayak outfitted with a bunch of video cameras. I enjoy watching them and you will too. 1) When did you start kayak fishing? I started kayak fishing in 2008, but I have been fishing in one form or another for over 35 years 2) What was your first kayak and what species of fish did you catch first? My first kayak was an Ocean Kayak Trident 15; my first kayak caught fish was a humble mackerel! 3) What kayak(s) are you presently using now? I still have the Trident 15, and also a couple of Malibu Mini-X’s 4) Where do you do most of your fishing and what species do you target the most? Most of my fishing is done at sea – and I target anything which swims, but particularly sporting fish such as bass and sharks. I also fish rivers and fly fish from the kayak in lakes. 5) What’s your most unusual catch? My most unusual catches were an octopus and a trigger fish (very rare in the UK) – both caught in the same session ! 6) Would you tell us about one or more of your most memorable kayak fishing experiences? My 2 most memorable kayak fishing trips were… A kayak fishing trip in Wales to try to catch a tope (type of shark caught in the UK). I had been trying to catch a tope from the shore for over 20 years in the UK without success. I had started to become a bit of an obsession, and one of the reasons I took up kayak fishing was to break my duck. I managed it at my second attempt in Wales, in my first proper season of kayak fishing. It was a memorable trip for lots of reasons – I was fishing with great friends, and the trip had been plagued by bad weather which stopped us from going fishing, it is a long trip just to get there and hard work to fish. Then at the last moment, we got a weather window and everything went right for us – the tope was the icing on the cake.
My other memorable kayak fishing trip was earlier this year, when I caught a 10lb bass. A bass of over 10lbs is the stuff of legend over in the UK – and again, something I had not achieved from the shore in over 20 years of fishing. It was most unexpected, and the day had not gone well up to that point. All of my friends had caught lots of fish and I had been the one taking pictures, but not catching anything! They decided they had filled their boots for the day, so they went home, leaving me to wonder why I was staying by myself… Well, if I had gone back with them, I never would have caught my fish of a lifetime. 7) When did you start your website? I started my website in 2010. Here are some of Dizzy’s posts which contain his videos. They’re very good, check them out. |
